Perhaps more important than winning a medal is for the athletes to embody the Olympic Creed which states, “the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” During these Olympic events, some athletes will experience “the thrill of victory, most will experience the agony of defeat.” The fact that a majority of participates are in the later group, it makes it all the more important that they embrace and handle the struggle with character. As armchair athletes the time has come to let the rally cry be heard, let the games begin!
